The rule of thumb here is, "If you can dig, you can plant," meaning that if the ground is not fully frozen, you can plant. Just note that your asparagus crowns will remain dormant until the soil temperature reaches 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

Amend your soil to ensure it is well-draining. We recommend adding at least 30% sand to your soil. Additionally, incorporating compost can further improve your soil structure.

Dig rows of trenches 3 feet apart. Your trenches should be 6?8 inches deep if you have heavier, clay-based soil and 8?10 inches deep for looser soils.

Plant your asparagus crowns in the trenches, spacing them 12 inches apart. When planting, simply lay them on their side. Once planted, completely fill in the rows with soil and water.

Asparagus are perennials in USDA hardiness zones 3-8. This means they will come back year after year! When well cared for, it is not uncommon for them to continue producing for 15 years. In some cases, asparagus plants have been known to produce for 30 or more years!
